巴波川(うずまがわ)

鉄道も自動車もなかった時代、物資輸送の中心は舟運でした。この辺りでとれた木材や麻は、巴波川左岸の栃木河岸から舟積みされて江戸へ運ばれ、江戸からは日光御用の荷や塩などが運ばれました。安永3年には十軒の船積問屋があったと言われています。今も川沿いには豪商の蔵が残っており、当時の繁栄ぶりを偲ぶことができます。

Uzuma River

Thanks to Uzuma River, which was used as a boat route to Edo, businesses that relied on shipping flourished in Tochigi. Storehouses of the traditional “Kura” style, which were owned by rich merchants, still remain along Uzuma River. You can feel the classical atmosphere of how prosperous the town was back then when you see those buildings.
